In the category of film form, Bordwell divide it into two forms of narrative (storytelling) and non-narrative form.

1. Forms of Narrative

Narrative is a form of storytelling that the event has a clear causal relationship and occurs in space and time is also clear. Due to the narration in the film based on the literature and drama.

However in addition to the aspect of space, time, and human events, the narrative is not only involves aspects of the story (story), but later the telling of it will be divided into plots.

There is some understanding of the plot itself, but if you want to combine to meet the definition in the movie, which all elements are visible and audible to the audience on the screen, where the elements are fragments of stories selected by the manufacturer to be arranged so that could represent storytelling. This means that from this plot the audience will weave throughout its aspects and to form a story (story) dibenaknya, in other words, the story is an abstract construction of the preparation audience plots in his head.

In addition, the narrative in the film also has a structure which is of course different from the literature (novels) and drama (theater), although there is closeness, but the structure in more movies adjust the maximum duration that is common or known by the public, which is between a few minutes to 3 hours. Therefore there is a division of two large structures, Structure of Classical Hollywood known in Indonesia with 3 Rounds and his opponent Structure, Structure Art Cinema Naration.

2. Form of Non-Narrative.

This form rather not tell, it's just a different way of telling the narrative like the storytelling, meaning aspects of story, plot, space, time, events and human remains just a different way to deliver. Therefore, how to tell a non-narrative in the book David Bordwell is very diverse and there are at least four ways of storytelling in this form:

a. Categorical

The film created a category that can be collected per sub-theme. Bordwell likens this way as entering the supermarket where each item will be categorized according to the type and not the brand. Many documentaries are included in this region, especially the common documentary aired on television as public or pay television.

b. Rethorical

This film has a strong persuasion to influence the impression penontonsehingga propaganda embedded in this form. The type of film that many uses of this method is that many ad films aired on television and documentary propaganda, like the film Triumph of the Will (Leni Refensthal) and Why We Fight? (Frank Cappra).

c. Abstract

Telling of this film follows an attempt to remove an innermost expression of the author. Generally difficult to be digested by the audience, but because it is based on the freedom of expression so often the problem that the audience is no longer a major. Experimental film, in the 1970s known as the expanded cinema or today many artists who know him as video art is an example of the film with abstract shapes, such as films of Stan Brakhage, Tan June Paik, Norman McLaren, Hans Richter, Walter Ruttman, Luis Bunnuel etc. Movies in the sub-form is at present widely used in the music video.

d. Associational

The films in this form glance similar to an abstract form, but in fact very different. The film forms typically use images that do not have a relationship of space, time or event, but have the same goal to lead to a single theme or sub-theme of storytelling. Documentary with the type of association picture story using this form, such as the work of Man With A Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov), Baraka (Ron Fricke) and the trilogy of films Geodfrey Region: Powwaqqatsi, Koyanisqatsi and Naqoyqatsi.
